NARRATIVE:
I take pride in having an open classroom which feels like a safe place for students to take risks. My middle level classes are not electives. Students are required to take those theater courses. As such, it is not always their favorite place to be. However, we have been able to have very successful classes by creating the expectation that everyone participates and everyone is treated with respect.
I have built a really strong relationship with my high school students. We recently had our first ever REACH Benefit Gala at which nine students were inducted into the International Thespian Society. I told stories to the public about working with each of them, and they told stories of why the theater was an important place in their life. It was a rewarding evening which reinforced the idea that the theater requires a positive environment for success to have a chance.
